How much should you spend on a gift?
Spend what you are comfortable with and what fits the relationship. The thought matters far more than the amount.
Spend what you can comfortably afford and what fits the relationship. Nobody remembers the amount. They remember whether the gift felt like you knew them.
Think in tiers
- Small token: coworkers, neighbours, teachers, casual friends.
- Solid pick: close friends, siblings, parents on regular occasions.
- Big splurge: partners, milestone birthdays, big life moments.
Office and group swaps
Follow the agreed limit. Going far over can make others uncomfortable. Going under is fine if the gift is thoughtful.
When money is tight
Give time or effort instead. Cook a meal, fix something, make a playlist, write a letter. These often land better than anything from a shop.
